Bio

Infused with spirituality, magic, and feminine mystique, Stephanie Roberts’ paintings and drawings exhibit a sophistication that belies the artist’s lack of formal training. Heavily influenced by mythology and fairytales, Stephanie began drawing the female characters of these stories in her childhood and continued through her high school years. Stephanie's artistic explorations blossomed when towards the end of 1999 she began to paint with watercolor. It was at this time that she became interested in the styles of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art, specifically the elegant, curving lines and intricate patterns of Art Nouveau and the sharp, sensual forms of the Photo Secession movement. Stephanie has been equally influenced by the writings of such authors and poets as John Keats, Robert Frost, and Humbert Wolfe and artists such as W. Heath Robinson, Margaret Mackintosh, John William Waterhouse, Alphonse Mucha, and Edmund Dulac. Both haunting and intimate, Stephanie Roberts’ paintings and drawings invite the viewer into a tranquil world where femininity and nature reign supreme. Ancient and powerful female figures such as Pandora, Ophelia, and Mata Hari inhabit the canvas, exuding a soothing, mysterious presence. Like her Art Nouveau predecessors, Stephanie manages to delicately weave line and color to create images that are both innovative and timeless. She says, “My art is an ancient cry that is determined to be remembered on paper.” Stephanie has shown and sold her work in several galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico as well as selling her work to many private collectors all over the world. Stephanie's artwork has appeared in a book titled Aphrodesia: The Art of the Female Form, both volumes 1 and 2. Her work can also be found in White Wolf's "Scion" role playing game. Currently you can find her art along with many other talented artist in the 2008 Tori Amos RAINN calendar. If you find your self in Santa Fe New Mexico you can see her art in person at the POP Gallery.
